Ammonium Sulphate Attractively Priced
With excellent early rains and seeding nearing completion in timely and ideal conditions, confidence in the season ahead for at least an average production year is very positive. At our property NW of Orroroo more rain has fallen so far this year than for the whole of last year. We hope BOM’s forecast for above average winter rainfall comes to fruition.

Agriculture is an Essential Industry
For us at Soil Management Systems it has been a very busy period thanks to the excellent early rains throughout NSW and Victoria. For all Australian farmers it has been mostly business as usual despite the pandemic. On a positive note it has been highlighted to consumers that agriculture is an essential industry and could never be shut down.
Fertiliser prices increased quite markedly from their lows late last year due to a combination of increasing world prices and a fall in our dollar. However, for our Ammonium Sulphate Western Grade prices have remained attractive particularly against Urea. This presents a great opportunity for early post emergent applications and to take advantage of lifting soil Sulphur levels.

Ammonium Sulphate
Sulphur is very much overlooked as an essential nutrient. Soils actually require a much higher level for biological processes than the plants growing in them. This is not recognized in most soil test. At the Worldwide Agricultural Conference at Lincoln University in New Zealand various soil scientist presented on the need for much higher levels of this nutrient for soil fertility. Sulphur is synergistic with Nitrogen greatly increasing the efficiency of Nitrogen uptake. I have written several times in last few years of the very poor nitrogen use efficiency overall. Combined with the stability of Ammonium Nitrogen, Ammonium Sulphate Western Grade pricing this year is very attractive.
