Like all farmers we here at Soil Management Systems are hoping and praying this season will be a bountiful one. As a farmer myself it is the first time I have experienced a severe back on back drought although it has happened in our parents and grandparents time. Below is the soil moisture map at end of January which shows that we really need above average rains to grow an average yielding crop this year. Fortunately, recent rains are starting to build some soil moisture.
Fertiliser Prices Drop
The good news for farmers after these drought years is fertilizer prices are at around 10-year lows. World phosphorus prices have dropped every month since early last year although this last month they have jumped. With the lower dollar recently, it may be a good time to order before possible increases.
SMS Guano, an excellent and preferred phosphorus source in many ways, is at present the lowest price we have been able to offer since 2011 when we began importing.
Readers may have noticed we have advertised it as air-seeder ready. Soil Management Systems initially invested heavily in securing a premium quality granulated Guano and have the only source with a granule of integrity. Previously the Guano that was imported was not suitable to air-seeders, blocking in the distribution area and causing frustrations. Although there is some dust there has been no problem with the thousands of tons sold in recent years. SMS have been very keen to promote Guano as a superior phosphorus plus numerous other nutrients fertilizer into Australian agriculture; “a mineral rich fertilizer for our mineral poor soils”.
