Guano Phosphorus Fertiliser Attractively Priced
Soil Management Systems has Guano Phosphorus Fertiliser very attractively priced at over $200 per ton less than traditional MAP/DAP for same application rate.
Guano Phosphorus Fertiliser Improves Phosphorus Use Efficiency
After a few years of relatively low fertiliser prices, this year has seen a huge increase in both phosphorus and nitrogen prices. Thus, the topic of Fertiliser Use Efficiency would be well worthwhile revisiting. It is a topic which gets some attention and some trials done but clearly there is not a full understanding of the variables.
The nature and characteristics of Ammonium Sulphate in the majority of situations cause it to be much more efficiently utilized than Urea which can be very volatile and leachable. Therefore, it is not a case of applying double the volume of Ammonium Sulphate which is half the analysis of nitrogen to Urea. An understanding of the variables helps to determine application rates. Urea is preferred in late season applications.
Phosphorus availability in soils is quite complex and is not simply a matter of mathematics to determine application rates. Availability of phosphorus also depends on the type of phosphorus fertiliser; eg, Single Super with its high Sulphur content enhances uptake by plants, manures such as chicken manure it is available over an extended period, DAP, MAP & TSP can tie up very quickly; SMS Guano trials with Dr Ashley Martin (microbiology Laboratories Australia) with its high Phosphorus content has shown very high efficiency in both low and high pH soils. Dr Therese McBeath (CSIRO Waite) has found an efficiency across a range of soil types in southeastern Australia of 3 – 30% in year of application with the traditional MAP/DAP. Phosphorus seed dressing and foliar applications are options that in some situations prove effective. Note: only scientifically formulated phosphorus foliar products are effective. In our work at Soil Management Systems across Australia over three decades we have worked with farmers on gaining greater understanding and increasing the returns on their investment in fertiliser applications. Our comprehensive soil analysis and visual soil assessments (VSA) along with plant tissue testing are a starting point. The data from these gives farmers much more understanding and confidence in their fertiliser decisions.
As farmers there is continued pressure to become more efficient in all aspects of farming. This should include Fertiliser Use Efficiency. The present high fertiliser prices present an opportunity for increasing the return on investment in this essential farm input.
