I have been part of a number of soil discussion groups in the past year and it has been interesting to hear and see how individual farmers are doing different things to improve their soils productivity. Although methods are different, they all have in common a desire to build healthier productive soils alive with a diversity of soil biota. Visit CSIRO for Soil Biota information
SMS Guano with a full spectrum of nutrients and its attractiveness to soil biota is ideal for this purpose along with the greater efficiency of its nutrients such as phosphorus.
GRDC has reported that research by Agricultural Victoria of nitrogen efficiency from Urea at just 34%. For phosphorus CSIRO (T McBeath) found throughout SE Australia an efficiency ranging from 3 to just 30%. For our SMS Guano, phosphorus efficiency was measured in research trials much higher in both acid and high pH soils. (A Martin)
I have always maintained there is no one magical product and there are many variables. I believe a major answer is in soil health which should be a primary focus for the whole of one’s farming career.
Apparently, the experts know what the climate will be like in 2050 but can’t get it right in a short few months. It is satisfying to have a nice mild wet El-Nino event at the moment. This will be a real bonus for building soil moisture for the coming cropping and pastures and give more confidence for the season ahead.
Soil Management Systems is here for all your soil and plant nutrition needs. We have had some good moisture for our South Australian Soils and look forward to a good planting season.
